Broadband FAQ

Q: Why would I get Ripplecom Broadband instead of mobile or DSL Broadband?

Ripplecom offer customers an always on internet connection, there is no need to worry about slow downloads, hidden costs, line rental fees, busy signals or disconnections anymore. Ripplecom provide lower latency and faster, more consistent speeds than mobile broadband.

Q: How can I get Ripplecom Broadband?

You can check if your house or office is within the Ripplecom coverage area by checking our coverage map or you can call and speak to one of our sales representatives who will do the check for you.

As our service relies on line of sight to the transmitter we cannot be 100% sure that you can get connected to Ripplecom broadband until one of our engineers conducts a site survey at your premises. Line of sight is critical to our service as the transmitter we install on your premises must have unencumbered line of sight to our transmitter base station. Obstructions such as trees, mountains and other natural obstacles can also result in loss of signal.

Once you place an order with us we will dispatch an engineer to your house to conduct a site survey. We don't carry out an on-site survey prior to you placing an order, but we can guarantee you that our engineers will conduct a number of tests to ensure that you can avail of the service. If there is a problem with receiving a signal the installation will not go ahead.

We will then attach a small receiving antenna to your home or office and a cable will be brought inside to carry the internet service in from the antenna. The picture below shows one of our antenna on the roof of a house.

The cable we provide is then plugged directly into your computer or wireless router. The antenna on your roof or building will receive a signal from one of our many base station transmitters. These base station transmitters are linked to each other wirelessly or by fibre optic cable.

Q: How do I sign up and what is the order process?

Contact Ripplecom on 061 500 250, a sales agent will facilitate the order process for you. Otherwise, click here to send us your information and a Ripplecom representative will contact you. Installation takes place within 10 working days of the order being received by Ripplecom.

  • A subscriber antenna is installed on your roof or building by a fully trained and accredited Ripplecom engineer
  • A data cable and power supply unit is delivered to the room of your choice where you can plug in your computer or wireless router
  • Up to 3 hours labor and 20 metres of cable included in our standard install
  • Radio signal strength test is carried out to ensure optimum performance
  • Bandwidth management system is initiated to ensure minimum contention

Q: How does Ripplecom broadband work?

Ripplecom broadband is a high speed fixed wireless broadband service. Instead of using a phone line or cable to receive broadband, Ripplecom fixed wireless broadband uses radio technology to connect your home or office.

Q: What factors determine if I will be successfully installed?

A number of factors determine if service can be delivered to your address:

  • Line of site (LOS) - Line of sight is critical to our service. Ripplecom provides broadband using radio waves. The transmitter we install on your premises must have unencumbered line of site to our transmitter base station as illustrated in the diagram below.
  • Distance – Distance from the transmitter station can result in slower speeds or loss of signal.
  • Local obstructions – Trees, mountains and other natural obstacles can result in loss of service.

Q: Where is the antenna or “Subscriber Unit” placed?

  • The antenna will be placed similar to a TV aerial on your roof or wall of your building. Our installers will mount the antenna as unobtrusively as possible.
  • Please note that if you are located in a listed or preserved building, additional permissions are required.
  • The Ripplecom engineer will then run a cable from the antenna into a room in your house. You can insert that cable directly into your computer. If you wish to make your home wireless in order to connect multiple devices, then you will require a wireless router. Ripplecom offer special discounts on routers from time to time, please speak to a sales representative for further information. Ripplecom routers are dispatched to you pre-configured, so its a plug n' play solution.

Q: Is my Ripplecom connection secure?

  • Ripplecom is as secure as any other internet service. It is not possible for an outsider to access your connection; however, it is advisable to consider purchasing a home anti-virus security product.
  • Ripplecom is fully licensed by Comreg - Commission for Communications Regulation
  • Ripplecom is a member of the ISPAI (Internet Service Providers Association of Ireland) which is the organisation responsible for the reduction of illegal internet content in
  • Customers with knowledge of serious illegal content are encouraged to inform Ripplecom who will pass it along to the relevant authorities.

    • Ethernet Port - an opening on computer network equipment that the ethernet cable is plugged into

Q: What factors affect the broadband speed that I can receive?

The following are how we define some of the terms used on our web site:

  • Advertised Speeds - This is the speed used in the description of the packages we sell, ie. Our entry level service is described as “up to” 2Mb because the service is provided at the highest possible speed that a line can support up to the 2Mb speed.
  • Maximum Access Line Speed (Or 'Estimated Maximum Line Speed') - This is the maximum speed your line should be able to support.
  • Throughput Speed (Also known as 'Connection Speed') - This is the actual speed experienced when you are connected to the internet. This figure is often dependent on many factors, from the number of subscribers online at the same time to the number of people accessing the same web sites that you are. Throughput can vary from day to day or intervals within the same day.

Q: Why can I not get a faster Ripplecom Broadband product?

There are a few reasons why you may not be able to get a faster broadband product:

  • You may live too far from the transmitter station which adds noise to the connection itself which then allows less data to be passed to you.
  • There may be local or remote frequency interference which could affect quality of your connection.
  • There may be local obstructions causing Line of Site issues for your connection.
