Phone FAQ

Q: How is Ripplecom phone service different from eircom’s phone service?

Ripplecom's  phone service works just like an ordinary telephone with the only difference being that your telephone works via our broadband connection instead of over eircom's telephone network.

Ripplecom's phone service also offers you the benefit of making high quality, local, long distance and international calls for less and has more features than most traditional phone service offerings.

Since our service uses broadband, you are not charged for line rental. You continue to make and receive calls in exactly the same way as you do with your current telephone connection but you save over €300 a year in line rental fees.

The other big difference between Ripplecom and eircom is that you will never receive a phone bill from Ripplecom. We provide a pre-pay facility which allows you to top up your call credit giving you control of what you spend and ensures that you don't get any unexpected high bills.

Q: If I switch to Ripplecom will I save money?

Yes, you can save up to 50% on your telephone costs if you switch or upgrade to Ripplecom Phone. With Ripplecom phone you dont need a land line which means you dont have any more line rental fees. You are not charged for local or national calls at any time of the day and you will also receive 50 minutes free at off peak times to any Irish mobile. We have very competitive calls costs for international destinations and to mobile.

Ripplecom's phone service requires an internet connection, and your choice of a Ripplecom Voice Enabaled Router (to use with your standard telephone) or a VoIP phone which can be plugged straight into a router of your choice.

Q: What is a Ripplecom Voice Enabled Router?

This is a Linksys WRP400 that has been configured to allow transmission of the Ripplecom voice service. With this equipment (which will also distribute a wireless Internet signal around your home), you enable your standard telephone into a phone that can make calls over the internet.

The router will be located where the Internet cable terminates in your home, your telephone will need to be plugged into the router.

Q: How to choose what Hardware you will need for your Ripplecom Phone Service?

The most cost effective way to start making calls immediately is to use a Ripplecom Voice Enabled Router

If you have cordless handsets, then only the main base station will need to be in the same room as the router. Your other handsets will work anywhere else around your house.

I dont have a phone

If you dont have a telephone, then you could consider purchasing a VoIP phone. We recommend the Siemens A580 IP Cordless DECT Phone. This phone works with both internet and traditional telephony. Q: How do I set up Call Forwarding?

Use Normal Forwards to receive your phone calls on more than one phone and redirect calls. If you would like all your calls to forward to another phone number or SIP account, enter the number or SIP details in the 1st Normal Forwards box as indicted in the diagram below.

If you would like incoming calls to ring your Ripplecom phone and another line at the same time, leave SIP/your username in the 1st Normal Foward, then enter the alternative number or SIP account in the 2nd Normal Forward. Both will now ring simultaneously until a line is answered.

For example: If you wanted to forward all your calls to an Irish mobile number if your Ripplecom number becomes unavailable:

Leave SIP/your username in the 1st Normal Forward and enter the mobile phone number in the format (003538612345678) in the 2nd Normal Forward. You have the option to enter a 3rd forward in the 3rd redirect in the same format as above. Remember to click save to commit your changes. The status feedback will tell you if your update has been successful. All unanswered calls will be redirected to your voicemail or disconnected depending on your voicemail preferences.

Unavailable Forwards: This forwarding preference will ring if your Ripplecom phone does not register and becomes unavailable. This can happen if there is an interruption in your broadband service or if there is a power outage. You can divert calls to another SIP account or phone number.

If you would like your mobile phone to ring if your Ripplecom number becomes unavailable: Leave SIP/your username in the 1st Normal Forward and enter mobile phone number in the format (003538612345678) in the 1st Unavailable Forward.

Busy Forwards will take effect if you are already on the phone and you have another incoming call. You can divert the call to another phone number or SIP account.

For example: If you would like your colleague's number to ring if your Ripplecom number is busy you can leave SIP/your username in the 1st Normal Forward and enter your colleagues number in the format (003538612345678) in the 1st Busy Forward. You have the option to enter a 2nd in the same format as above.
